In this hands-on Staff Engineer role, you will design and build the market data platform that powers Dune's institutional customers. You'll turn ambiguous requirements into clear system designs and implementations, taking ownership of critical infrastructure while mentoring engineers across the team. AI-assisted development is central to how you'll work, complemented by strong engineering judgment and accountability for what ships to production.

What you'll do

• Design and build distributed systems for ingesting, normalizing, processing, storing, and delivering realtime market data from blockchains and other sources.

• Develop streaming solutions that manage event ordering, timestamps, duplicates, replay, gaps, recovery, blockchain reorganizations, and finality guarantees.

• Create reliable client feeds and APIs with clear delivery contracts, schema evolution, access controls, and predictable performance under load.

• Partner cross-team on reference data models and historical data capture strategies.

• Define and continuously improve service objectives and data quality measures.

• Instrument latency, freshness, completeness, and correctness metrics; drive root cause analysis and lasting operational improvements from incidents.

• Own services through deployment and production support, including on-call rotation participation.

• Lead technical decisions across team boundaries, write clear design documents, and mentor engineers through implementation and code review.

What you'll bring

• Proven experience building and operating distributed backend or data services with demanding reliability and performance requirements; you understand failure modes and can debug across service and data boundaries.

• Hands-on expertise with realtime streaming systems, including concurrency, state management, backpressure, and recovery patterns.

• Strong computer science fundamentals and backend engineering skills; experience with Rust, Go, or comparable systems languages.

• Ability to translate ambiguous requirements into pragmatic designs and production services while helping other engineers deliver their parts.

• Clear written communication and the ability to work effectively within a distributed team.

• Experience with financial or market data at a financial institution.

Nice to have

• Onchain data experience including blockchain indexing for EVM or Solana.

• Reference data experience such as instrument masters, identifier mapping, effective-dated records, or tokenized asset data.

• Background at a company where data itself is the core product.
