Director of Engineering, Assets & Issuance

Paxos · Remote (United States, East Coast) · Full-time

About the role

Paxos is rebuilding global financial infrastructure by enabling instant, trustworthy movement of any asset across blockchains. The company operates blockchain infrastructure that tokenizes, custodies, trades and settles assets for leading financial institutions including PayPal, Venmo, Mastercard, Interactive Brokers and Charles Schwab. With over a decade of experience in fintech, Paxos is at the forefront of making financial systems more accessible, efficient and inclusive through digital asset innovation.

The Engineering team at Paxos builds and operates the systems that handle real money movement: stablecoin issuance, custody, trading, settlement and the ledgers that power them. Engineers work on distributed systems and blockchain infrastructure where reliability, security and correctness are critical requirements. They collaborate closely with Product, Security and Compliance to deliver systems that meet both technical excellence and regulatory standards.

You'll lead the engineering organization responsible for Assets & Issuance, a role that shapes technical architecture, grows the team and sets direction as the company scales. Rather than writing production code day to day, you'll go deep on architecture, reliability and hard technical decisions alongside your teams. You'll tackle complex problems in issuing and moving assets across blockchains, customers and jurisdictions, working with strong engineers and limited existing structure to deliver systems that are both fast and correct.

What you'll do

  • Own technical strategy, roadmap and delivery for Assets & Issuance, balancing speed to market with the reliability and controls that regulated, institutional customers require.
  • Review designs, pressure-test tradeoffs and lead by example in making difficult technical decisions alongside your teams.
  • Build and grow the engineering team by hiring senior engineers and managers, developing emerging leaders and shaping a culture centered on ownership, craft and bias to action.
  • Lead through incidents by setting standards for on-call, incident response and root-cause analysis, driving down operational risk over time.
  • Partner with Product, Security and Compliance to design systems that are secure and auditable by construction, with controls embedded in software rather than added afterward.
  • Drive the architecture of systems such as wallets, key management, ledgers, settlement and blockchain integrations depending on team scope.
  • Represent engineering to executive leadership, translating technical complexity into clear priorities and tradeoffs.

What you'll bring

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience including 8+ years leading engineering teams, with experience managing managers.
  • Early engineering or leadership experience at a fast-growing company where you built systems from scratch and scaled both technology and organization.
  • Proven track record building engineering teams and leading a sizable organization including managers as the business scaled.
  • Deep experience building and operating complex distributed systems where correctness, reliability and security are critical. Experience with money-moving infrastructure is strongly preferred.
  • Technical depth across multiple areas: distributed systems, blockchain infrastructure, MPC or key management, high-availability systems or security-sensitive financial software.
  • Strong technical credibility with senior engineers and ability to go deep on hard architectural and reliability decisions.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity and moving quickly without highly defined requirements.
  • Effective collaboration with Product, Security and Compliance, applying the right amount of process to maintain controls without slowing delivery.

Nice to have

  • Experience at both startup and scaled-company environments.
  • Prior experience in a regulated environment such as a trust company, broker-dealer or exchange.
  • Direct experience with blockchain protocols or smart contracts.

What they offer

  • Full-time remote position based on US East Coast.

Pay, location & hours

$284K–325.7K / year. Fully remote, open to applicants in United States, East Coast. Working hours: Americas overlap.
