About the role

OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company building systems to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits humanity. The company is known for its cutting-edge AI products and its commitment to safe, responsible AI development. OpenAI operates globally with a focus on both groundbreaking research and real-world applications that serve millions of users.

The Security team at OpenAI works to protect the company's systems, data, and employees through comprehensive platform and endpoint management. As part of this mission, the Client Platform Engineering team is responsible for the infrastructure that keeps employee devices secure, reliable, and productive. This role sits at the intersection of security, automation, and employee experience.

As a Client Platform Engineer, you will design and operate the systems that secure OpenAI's Linux fleet across different compliance environments. You will build intelligent automation workflows using OpenAI's own products and models to anticipate device issues, guide users through remediation, and remove friction from daily work. Your responsibilities will span from device onboarding and software delivery to fleet operations and incident response.

What you'll do

  • Own the full lifecycle of secure Linux endpoint management systems, including design, development, deployment, and production operations across multiple compliance contexts.
  • Create agentic workflows powered by OpenAI models that leverage fleet telemetry to predict problems, streamline employee support, and improve the user experience.
  • Accelerate new hire productivity by automating device setup, software delivery, and onboarding support using OpenAI products.
  • Build workflows with security controls including scoped access, human review for sensitive operations, audit trails, and tested recovery procedures.
  • Develop first-party software and integrate third-party and open-source tools for deployment, configuration, and application management.
  • Manage fleet infrastructure as code through GitOps practices with version control, peer review, and automated testing.
  • Build and operate CI/CD pipelines across Azure, AWS, and GCP with staged rollouts and validated rollback capabilities.
  • Use fleet telemetry to proactively enhance performance, detect configuration drift, and verify deployment success.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, drive incident resolution, and transform operational insights into systemic improvements.

What you'll bring

  • Strong programming skills in Python, Go, or a comparable modern language.
  • Deep expertise securing and managing Linux fleets at scale, including configuration management, MDM, device enrollment, policy enforcement, and cloud identity systems.
  • Hands-on experience with open-source endpoint tools for configuration, device management, application delivery, and telemetry collection.
  • Proven ability to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable systems across varying compliance requirements.
  • Advanced infrastructure management experience using IaC and GitOps tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or Chef.
  • Experience building and operating fleet infrastructure in public cloud environments including Azure, AWS, and GCP.
  • Strong analytical skills and a demonstrated ability to convert operational challenges into practical, lasting solutions.
  • Cross-functional collaboration experience working with IT, Security, and Engineering teams.

Nice to have

  • Expertise with open-source fleet management tools and frameworks.
  • Proficiency with containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of compliance standards such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, and NIST.
  • Professional security certifications such as CISSP, CISA, CISM, or CCSP.
  • Contributions to open-source endpoint security projects or active participation in technical communities.

What they offer

  • Full-time employment in a hybrid arrangement based in San Francisco.
  • The opportunity to work on security and automation infrastructure that directly impacts thousands of employees.
  • Direct access to OpenAI's AI models and products for solving real-world operational challenges.
