About the role
Anthropic is building AI systems that are safe, reliable, and interpretable. The team brings together researchers, engineers, and business leaders focused on creating beneficial AI aligned with human values. As a Manager of Applied AI Engineering, you will lead a technical team serving Anthropic's largest and most strategic customers—partner-customers that are both major revenue drivers and key distribution channels for Claude. Your engineers will work directly with these accounts' product and engineering teams to co-design solutions, establish implementation patterns, and guide deployments of Claude at scale.
This is a leadership role that bridges deep technical work with strategic account management. You'll build and develop a team of engineers embedded within customer organizations, set clear performance expectations, and maintain enough technical depth to uphold high engineering standards. Your team works in account-aligned pods alongside Applied AI Architects, and you'll coordinate closely with sales, partnerships, product, and research functions. You'll shepherd projects from technical discovery through production deployment, capture learnings from one major account to replicate across others, and feed customer-driven insights back into Anthropic's product strategy.
What you'll do
- Hire, mentor, and grow a team of Applied AI Engineers working with Mega accounts; establish structured feedback processes and clear competency frameworks for this customer-facing technical role.
- Assign engineers to customer pods while maintaining continuity and flexibility to deploy expertise where it's needed most across the segment.
- Partner directly with customer CTOs, engineering leaders, and product teams as a senior technical advisor on architecture decisions, evaluation strategies, advanced prompting techniques, agentic frameworks, and production deployment patterns.
- Lead hands-on co-build work with customer engineering teams across prototypes, pilots, and full production implementations tied to joint account roadmaps.
- Establish and track performance metrics, reporting cadence, and dashboards that keep pod leads and stakeholders informed on team health, customer impact, and consumption objectives.
- Create and maintain shared resources across pods—reference architectures, agentic patterns, and evaluation frameworks—so insights from one customer benefit all accounts.
- Serve as technical escalation for your team's accounts and work with pod leads and sales to sequence work for maximum customer impact.
- Surface high-impact requirements and product feedback from customers to Anthropic's Product and Research teams, advocating for changes with context and weight.
- Contribute external thought leadership through talks, blog posts, white papers, and public documentation of LLM techniques and best practices.
- Travel to customer sites for technical workshops, executive sessions, implementation support, and relationship building; represent Anthropic at conferences.
What you'll bring
- At least six years in technical roles such as Forward Deployed Engineer, Software Engineer, Solutions Engineer, or Technical Product Manager.
- At least four years in a formal leadership capacity, including some experience managing managers or multiple teams; founding experience is also valued.
- Proven success hiring, developing, and scaling customer-facing technical teams in fast-moving or hypergrowth settings.
- Experience supporting large strategic accounts at platform, infrastructure, or model companies where the relationship combined customer and partner dynamics.
- Production experience with large language models including advanced prompt engineering, agent development, evaluation frameworks, and deployment at scale; technical depth sufficient to review and set standards for your team's work.
- Strong Python or TypeScript programming skills and demonstrated ability building production applications.
- Track record engaging senior technical leaders (CTOs, CPOs, engineering leaders) and influencing technical architecture decisions and product roadmaps.
- Experience building or leading mixed pre-sales and delivery teams combining technical roles across different functions.
- Comfort navigating ambiguity, working across domains, and finding clear solutions to complex problems.
Nice to have
- Background in transcript analysis and Model Context Protocol (MCP).
