About the role
Software Engineer, Money Platform
OpenRouter is the leading AI routing and infrastructure platform that enables enterprises to access, manage and optimize large language models across multiple providers without vendor lock-in, capacity limits or excess costs. The company powers advanced AI teams globally by providing the flexibility to scale confidently and remain adaptable as models evolve. As enterprises increasingly adopt AI at scale, OpenRouter has become central to how organizations deploy language models across research, product and production environments.
Every transaction flowing through OpenRouter represents a financial event. Billions of requests move across hundreds of models and dozens of providers, each carrying distinct costs, pricing structures, discount levels and contract terms. OpenRouter is seeking an engineer to design and own the financial engine that powers its inference gateway, marketplace and growing portfolio of agentic products. You will build the platform that enables the business to support any pricing model imaginable. If you have fintech experience and are passionate about financial systems, this is an opportunity to architect an AI-native Money Platform from scratch.
What you'll do
- Design flexible pricing and contract structures, including commitment options, bring-your-own-key pricing, overage handling, platform fees and per-seat models. Enable Sales and Customer Success to test new deal structures independently.
- Automate the entire quote-to-cash workflow, moving customers from signed contracts to provisioned accounts with correct billing automatically. Manage proof-of-concept and production contracts through separate systems. Build credit transfers and self-serve grant capabilities into internal tools.
- Establish the financial system of record, owning fees, plans and entitlements with robust data architecture that supports both internal and customer reporting.
- Guarantee accurate metering and revenue recognition. Ensure every request is metered, priced and recorded exactly once across streaming spend tracking and usage records.
- Own the complete billing lifecycle including invoicing, prepaid credits, automatic top-ups, refunds, tax and VAT handling, purchase orders, and spend-against-commitment tracking. Manage Stripe integration, payment recovery and collections processes.
- Build a double-entry ledger as the authoritative financial record. Automate reconciliation across Postgres, Stripe, billing and usage systems. Handle provider settlements and payables, delivering finance-ready data for period close.
- Collaborate across Provider, Trust and Safety, Sales, Customer Success and Finance teams. Partner on usage tracking, per-generation cost attribution, provider pricing and fraud prevention.
What you'll bring
- Five or more years building production financial systems including billing, payments, ledgers or revenue infrastructure at fintech companies or usage-based SaaS platforms.
- Expert knowledge of money-correctness principles including idempotency, double-entry accounting, exactly-once event processing, reconciliation and secure financial data migrations.
- Hands-on experience with Stripe or comparable payment processors and billing or invoicing platforms supporting contracts, subscriptions and usage-based pricing models.
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript and SQL. Experience with Postgres and analytical data stores like ClickHouse handling high event volume.
- Working understanding of accounting concepts including accounts receivable and payable, revenue recognition, deferred revenue and month-end close procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively across teams, translating complex business requirements into clean technical solutions. Experience communicating with finance and business stakeholders.
- High agency and comfort with AI coding tools. You use coding assistants daily and enjoy automating manual finance operations.
Nice to have
- Experience building usage-based, hybrid or seat-based billing systems at scale.
- Familiarity with streaming data pipelines such as Dataflow, Spanner or Kafka for metering and event processing.
- Background in payments fraud and risk systems like Stripe Radar.
- Experience with multi-currency support, sales tax, VAT or international payment methods.
- Prior involvement preparing financial systems for audit processes.
What they offer
- Remote position based in the United States.
- Full-time employment.
