Director, SOX Infrastructure

Anthropic · San Francisco, CA · Full-time
Salary not listed

About the role

Anthropic is an AI safety company building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The organization brings together researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders to create beneficial AI that serves users and society. As the company scales toward becoming a public company, it is strengthening its financial governance and control infrastructure.

Anthropic seeks a Director of SOX Infrastructure to lead the design and execution of financial controls over compute and infrastructure within the Finance team. You will oversee one of the company's largest cost centers and most complex financial reporting domains. In this role, you will establish how SOX controls function at an AI-first organization where the traditional control playbook does not yet exist. Compute infrastructure involves multi-year vendor agreements, metered usage in third-party environments, telemetry-based accruals, and increasingly automated provisioning. Your work will define controls that work across both business and IT environments, from assessing vendor reports to monitoring high-volume usage data, all while maintaining the rigor expected of a public company.

What you'll do

  • Lead risk assessment and internal control design for compute and infrastructure accounting, covering cloud spend, usage-based costs, vendor commitments, credits, accruals, cost allocation, budgeting, and asset lifecycle management
  • Develop and execute the SOX control plan and roadmap for these processes, making prioritization decisions about what must be controlled immediately versus what follows as the company scales
  • Own scoping, risk assessment, testing, remediation, and reporting for compute and infrastructure; partner with Compute Accounting, Finance Analytics, Infrastructure Engineering, Procurement, and Finance Strategy teams
  • Design scalable and automated controls that incorporate AI and machine learning, including full-population matching of usage to invoices, continuous monitoring, and anomaly detection
  • Establish controls over multi-year provider agreements, reserved capacity, minimum spend commitments, usage-based charges, and billing corrections; assess reliance on cloud providers through SOC 1 review and exception analysis
  • Design and test controls over cost allocation between cost of revenue and research and development, including workload tagging and allocation model changes
  • Oversee control documentation and maintain audit-ready evidence for all compute and infrastructure processes in compliance with US GAAP and SEC requirements
  • Partner with IT SOX and engineering teams on IT general controls and automated controls supporting compute data pipelines, interfaces, and change management

What you'll bring

  • Deep experience designing and implementing SOX controls, ideally in complex technical or infrastructure domains
  • Strong understanding of cloud computing economics, vendor billing practices, and cost accounting in technology environments
  • Expertise in financial close processes, account reconciliation, accrual accounting, and cost allocation methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to assess control risk, design control activities, and evaluate control operating effectiveness
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and communicating with external auditors on control matters
  • Familiarity with data pipelines, business intelligence platforms, and the use of automation to enhance financial controls
  • Ability to build controls from first principles in emerging areas where established best practices may not yet exist

Nice to have

  • Experience with AI, machine learning systems, or other rapidly evolving technology domains
  • Knowledge of IT general controls, system interfaces, and change management processes
  • Background in infrastructure engineering or cost accounting for compute-heavy organizations

What they offer

  • Full-time position based in San Francisco, CA
  • Opportunity to shape financial controls and governance at a high-growth AI company during its pre-IPO phase
