About the role

OpenAI is building artificial intelligence systems designed to benefit humanity, operating at the forefront of AI research and deployment. The People Technology team sits at the intersection of human resources operations and engineering, responsible for the systems and tools that help OpenAI hire, support, and grow a global workforce safely and effectively.

This role focuses on Workday administration across three critical domains: absence management, time tracking, and benefits administration. You'll own these systems end-to-end, from initial configuration through ongoing optimization and support for employees across the US and internationally.

What you'll do

  • Configure and maintain Workday Absence and Time Tracking modules, including accrual rules, eligibility criteria, leave processes, time entry validations, and approval workflows for a rapidly scaling global team.
  • Independently manage US and international benefits configuration: plan structures, eligibility rules, enrollment events, life event processing, coverage levels, and rate management.
  • Coordinate with Payroll, Finance, and other system owners to ensure absence, time, and benefits data flows accurately downstream. Investigate data issues and test the impact of your configuration changes.
  • Lead open enrollment readiness cycles, handling configuration, testing, launch coordination with benefits vendors and technical teams, and ongoing troubleshooting.
  • Manage system implementations for new countries and entities, translating local policy requirements into working configurations.
  • Drive projects from initial discovery through prioritization, configuration, testing, release, documentation, and post-launch support, staying accountable for outcomes.
  • Collaborate with engineers to identify automation and AI opportunities that reduce manual work and improve the employee experience.
  • Maintain system security, data integrity, documentation, and change controls. Address production issues and prevent recurrence.

You'll bring deep hands-on Workday experience across Absence, Time Tracking, and Benefits modules, with a track record of independently owning full implementation cycles. You understand how these three systems connect to each other and to payroll downstream. You've translated complex, multi-country policies into maintainable configurations and can troubleshoot integrations with technical partners. You're comfortable with Workday technical fundamentals: business processes, calculated fields, reporting, security, and data loading.

Beyond technical skills, you demonstrate ownership mentality, asking good questions to understand problems before jumping to solutions. You balance urgent operational needs against longer-term improvements and follow through on details. You communicate clearly across People, Finance, Payroll, Benefits, and Engineering teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience leading implementations or new country launches for global absence, time, or benefits programs.
  • Work with software engineers on internal products, integrations, or workflow automation.
  • Applied use of AI in systems administration, testing, or documentation.
  • Workday certifications or Workday Pro credentials.

What we offer

  • Remote work opportunity, US-based.
  • Full-time employment.

Pay, location & hours

$187K–280K / year. Fully remote, open to applicants in US. Working hours: Americas overlap.
