About the role
Mysten Labs is building infrastructure for decentralized protocols and the blockchain-based internet of value. The company raised $300M in Series B funding from top-tier investors including a16z, Jump Crypto, and Binance Labs, and operates as a fully remote organization.
You'll join the Security team as a Staff Security Engineer embedded with the Walrus project. In this role, you're the primary security partner for the team, guiding architecture from the earliest design phases and instilling security practices throughout the entire development lifecycle.
Here's what the work involves
Lead security assessments for new Walrus features while identifying systemic risks across Mysten's broader ecosystem. You'll develop actionable remediation plans for complex architectural challenges. Drive adoption of "security-by-design" thinking—making sure security is a conversation starter, not an afterthought, before any code gets written. Use AI-driven tools and automation to handle routine security tasks so your team can focus on high-impact research. Maintain a generalist perspective across infrastructure, application, and product security domains. Work with engineering leadership to balance security priorities against feature velocity. Mentor engineers at all levels and set the technical direction for security standards organization-wide.
You'll need at least 8 years in security engineering, ideally operating at Staff level (E6 equivalent) or above. A Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science or equivalent professional background is required. You should have deep generalist security chops spanning infrastructure, applications, and cryptography. You're skilled at building and deploying automated security tooling and have hands-on experience with AI/ML or advanced static and dynamic analysis at scale. Most importantly, you've worked closely with engineering teams during design phases to catch and prevent high-risk flaws early. Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical direction across teams are essential.
Prior exposure to decentralized storage, distributed systems, or Web3 is a plus but not required. Experience leading security transformations or implementing security-by-design in fast-growing engineering environments would be valuable. You're comfortable moving between tactical hands-on work and strategic long-term planning.
Employment requires successful completion of a background check. This is a full-time, remote position based in the USA.
Pay, location & hours
$180K–264K / year. Fully remote, open to applicants in USA. Working hours: Americas overlap.
