About the role
AssemblyAI builds foundational speech recognition models that power the next generation of voice applications. The company processes over 2 million hours of audio daily and handles more than 1 million API calls every day, serving customers like Granola, Fireflies, Figure AI, and CallRail. With fewer than 100 employees generating approximately $600,000 in annual revenue per person, AssemblyAI operates as a lean, fast-moving organization where every team member has meaningful ownership and impact on the business.
AssemblyAI is a well-capitalized, growth-stage AI company where the business model is proven and the market opportunity is steep, yet the organization remains small enough that individual contributions shape the company's direction. The team operates without heavy bureaucratic processes, gatekeeping, or approval layers, allowing people to move quickly and focus on solving technically complex problems at meaningful scale. This is a rare opportunity to join a high-performing organization that competes directly with frontier research labs while maintaining the agility and autonomy of an early-stage company.
You'll serve as Senior Technical Recruiter, owning full-cycle hiring for the Research team and a portfolio of senior Engineering roles including Researchers, Research Engineers, and ML Engineers. This position reports to the People Operations team and works directly with research and engineering leadership.
What you'll do
- Own complete recruiting lifecycle for Research and senior Engineering positions, from initial requirements gathering through offer acceptance and onboarding
- Build outbound-first talent pipelines by mapping researchers and engineers at frontier AI labs, speech and audio teams, and academic institutions; track technical publications, open-source contributions, and conference presentations
- Collaborate with research and engineering leaders to develop detailed candidate profiles, align hiring bar standards, and create effective interview processes
- Conduct substantive technical screens with candidates and provide hiring managers with detailed, evidence-based assessments
- Navigate complex closing conversations, including scenarios with competing offers from major labs, equity negotiations, and international hiring considerations
- Cultivate relationships with high-potential candidates who may not be immediately available
- Leverage data and AI tools to improve efficiency, including advanced sourcing platforms, Greenhouse pipeline management, and funnel analytics
- Contribute to team scaling by developing interviewer training programs, creating structured assessment materials, and designing a candidate experience that reflects organizational values
What you'll bring
- Five or more years of technical recruiting experience with a demonstrated track record hiring ML researchers, research engineers, or ML and infrastructure engineers at AI labs, AI-native startups, or established technology companies
- Strong outbound sourcing skills and an active network within the ML and AI research community
- Technical depth sufficient to discuss model training, evaluation, and inference methodologies with researchers and distinguish experienced profiles from keyword matches
- Proven ability closing senior candidates against competing offers, particularly in equity-heavy compensation scenarios
- Proficiency with Greenhouse, LinkedIn Recruiter, JuiceBox or comparable tools, and modern AI-assisted sourcing platforms
- Self-direction and initiative to identify high-impact priorities and execute without external prompting
What they offer
- Salary range of $170,000 to $200,000 for US-based candidates
- Competitive equity grants as part of total compensation
- 100% employer-paid benefits
