About the role

Cohere is a leading enterprise AI company building foundation models and end-to-end products that solve real-world business problems. The company develops and deploys frontier AI systems for enterprises, with offices across Toronto, London, New York, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin and Seoul. Cohere's team of researchers, engineers and designers is focused on advancing AI capabilities and driving measurable value for customers globally.

The Generative Machine Learning organization at Cohere is expanding and seeking a Staff Technical Program Manager to join the team. This role sits at the intersection of operational excellence and strategic impact, requiring someone who can execute with precision on tactical initiatives while shaping long-term direction alongside senior leadership. You'll work in a dynamic, high-growth environment where no two days are the same, bringing structure to fast-paced efforts and scaling impact across the organization.

What you'll do

  • Build and refine foundational processes that enable Generative Modeling teams to execute faster and more predictably
  • Expand the operational capacity of the Modeling TPM function in partnership with the Modeling TPM lead, maintaining a lean structure while managing increasing portfolio complexity
  • Lead long-horizon programs spanning quarters or years alongside short-term, high-impact initiatives that require navigating ambiguous challenges
  • Coordinate directly with leaders across the Modeling organization and beyond on designing, training and improving core generative models
  • Drive cross-functional, company-wide strategic programs collaborating with Product, Engineering, Legal, Platform, Infrastructure, Policy and Finance teams
  • Map dependencies and risks, ensuring smooth execution across programs while communicating status to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Establish clear communication flows for priorities, ideas and knowledge throughout the Modeling organization and beyond
  • Respond rapidly to program-level changes, clarifying scope and managing resources as priorities evolve

What you'll bring

  • Five to ten years as a Technical Program Manager combined with five or more years working directly on AI and ML initiatives, with strong preference for foundation model development experience
  • Deep knowledge of machine learning with particular strength in Natural Language Processing and Large Language Models, plus bonus experience with Multimodal AI
  • Proven ability to thrive in chaotic, fast-paced, low-structure environments with pragmatic problem-solving and comfort operating at both tactical and strategic levels
  • Direct personal understanding of the distinct challenges managing AI and ML projects compared to traditional software program management
  • Experience leading complex projects and programs requiring business acumen, including coordination with Finance on reporting and Policy on regulatory requirements
  • Hands-on technical experience that allows you to engage confidently with world-class researchers tackling cutting-edge ML challenges

Nice to have

  • Direct experience training or fine-tuning foundation models

What they offer

  • Remote-first work arrangement with priority consideration for candidates within one to two hours of British Standard Time
