Android Engineer, Plugin Developer Platform

OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company working to ensure that advanced AI systems benefit humanity broadly. The team focuses on making AI tools accessible, safe, and beneficial through products like ChatGPT and other applications.

The Plugin Developer Platform team at OpenAI builds the infrastructure that lets developers extend ChatGPT and create custom plugins, connectors, and interactive apps. You'll join the Applied AI team to bring these extensibility features to mobile, helping both developers and end users access powerful AI capabilities from their Android devices.

What you'll do

• Build native Android experiences that allow users to discover, install, and use developer-created plugins and interactive apps within ChatGPT.

• Develop reusable Android components and platform abstractions that support an expanding ecosystem of third-party integrations.

• Work with platform engineers to integrate native mobile interfaces with the underlying APIs, SDKs, and backend systems.

• Partner directly with developers and partners to understand their workflow needs and identify friction points in building for mobile.

• Improve application performance, reliability, testing infrastructure, and overall architecture.

• Own features across the full lifecycle from requirements and exploration through launch, measurement, and ongoing refinement.

• Significant experience shipping consumer-facing Android applications using Kotlin and modern development frameworks.

• A track record building high-quality mobile products at scale with strong attention to performance and user experience.

• A platform engineering mindset: you design interfaces and abstractions that other developers can confidently build upon.

• Comfort collaborating across product, design, and engineering teams, plus direct engagement with external developers and partners.

• Enthusiasm for bringing AI-powered tools to mobile and enabling new extensible experiences.

• The ability to thrive in a fast-moving environment where you help shape both product strategy and technical decisions.

This is a full-time role based in San Francisco with a hybrid schedule requiring three days in the office weekly. OpenAI provides relocation assistance for new employees relocating to the area.
