We are hiring a Director, Technical Accounting – Investments to join Anthropic's Finance team in San Francisco or Seattle. You will manage all accounting for the company's investment portfolio, joint ventures, and complex commercial arrangements, while supporting mergers and acquisitions as needed. You'll report to the Senior Director, Technical Accounting – M&A and Investments and work closely with Corporate Development, Legal, Tax, Treasury, and executive leadership to ensure investment economics are properly reflected under US GAAP.
What you'll do
- Execute technical accounting for strategic investments, joint ventures, and partnership structures from initial recognition through exit, including classification under ASC 321, 323, or 810, VIE analysis, and initial measurement
- Partner with Corporate Development to influence deal structures toward favorable outcomes by reviewing term sheets and deal documents before execution
- Lead quarterly portfolio reviews covering reconsideration events, impairment assessment, observable price changes, and equity method accounting, plus accounting for follow-on investments, conversions, down rounds, and exits
- Manage third-party valuation specialists and review fair values of investments, warrants, and derivative features, including Level 3 inputs and impairment analyses
- Own the investment rollforward, general ledger reconciliation, and portfolio reporting supporting close, FP&A, and leadership review
- Assess warrants, equity rights, and investment components embedded in partnerships and compute arrangements, coordinating with Accounting Policy on consideration allocation
- Support M&A transactions including accounting due diligence, purchase accounting, and measurement-period adjustments when deal volume requires
- Author and defend technical accounting policies and memoranda, partnering closely with external auditors on investment, consolidation, and M&A matters
- Build the investments operating model including intake forms, approval gates, memo templates, quarterly checklists, and SOX-ready controls designed to scale as the portfolio grows
- Prepare and review investment and transaction disclosures for quarterly and annual filings
What you'll bring
- Significant Big 4 experience in National Office, Transaction Advisory, or Capital Markets Accounting Advisory, paired with in-house experience at a technology company
- Proven track record leading complex valuations including business combinations, equity and debt investments, and Level 3 instruments, with experience directing and challenging third-party valuation specialists
- Hands-on ownership of accounting for a portfolio of minority or strategic investments, including quarterly impairment and fair value monitoring and at least one material investment
- Deep expertise in US GAAP for equity securities, equity method accounting, consolidation, VIEs, fair value measurement, and business combinations, with positions that have withstood auditor and regulator scrutiny
- Fluency in valuation concepts and ability to direct and challenge specialists on private company fair value, warrant pricing, impairment, and purchase price allocation models
- Experience operating within an investments accounting or deal accounting function, contributing to playbook and controls design
- Strong ability to communicate structuring trade-offs and technical conclusions with Corporate Development, Legal, and Tax
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills that translate complex accounting into clear business implications for cross-functional and senior audiences
- Comfort with hands-on technical execution in fast-paced, ambiguous environments, shifting between portfolio work and live transactions
