Senior Platform Engineer

The Platform team at Gemini builds internal infrastructure and developer tools that enable the broader engineering organization to scale efficiently. Rather than treating infrastructure as a collection of configurations, the Platform group develops production-grade systems with defined service-level objectives, documentation, and direct feedback loops from the teams that depend on them. This role sits at the intersection of software engineering and infrastructure operations—you'll work with product, security, data, and infrastructure teams to understand their needs and create reliable, self-service systems that make the dependable choice the easy choice.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and operate platform services, APIs, command-line interfaces, controllers, and automation using languages like Go, Python, or similar, owning each through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production operation.

• Develop self-service capabilities that enable engineers to provision environments, deploy services, manage infrastructure, and respond to operational issues without requiring manual platform team intervention.

• Create and maintain paved paths for service development and delivery through templates, libraries, deployment workflows, policy-as-code, and reusable platform primitives that reduce friction across the organization.

• Design and improve cloud, compute, storage, identity, and infrastructure foundations that engineering teams rely on daily.

• Operate core network infrastructure including virtual private clouds, cloud routing, and security controls across multiple public cloud providers and geographic regions.

• Lead the design and operation of compute, container, networking, and cloud foundations that support critical services and emerging workloads including distributed and AI-enabled systems.

• Establish and use service-level indicators, SLOs, error budgets, and production-readiness standards to make reliability decisions explicit and data-driven.

• Improve observability, alerting, capacity planning, and failure handling; design systems that degrade gracefully and recover automatically where safe.

• Participate in on-call rotation, lead incident response, and transform recurring operational work into permanent improvements through blameless postmortems.

• Collaborate with teams on architecture and technical design, providing guidance that shapes decisions without becoming a bottleneck.

What you'll bring

• Five or more years of professional software engineering, infrastructure engineering, SRE work, or equivalent combination, including meaningful ownership of production systems.

• Strong software engineering ability in at least one language such as Go, Python, Java, Rust, or similar, with experience building maintainable services, automation, CLIs, APIs, or developer tools—not just scripts or configuration.

• Demonstrated experience operating infrastructure and distributed systems in production, including diagnosing failures, managing capacity, improving performance, and designing for high availability and recovery.

• Ability to think in abstractions and design durable interfaces that allow room for future evolution while making pragmatic tradeoffs.

• Comfort establishing technical direction through design documents, prototypes, testing, and metrics.
