About the role
Cursor is an AI-powered code editor designed to help developers write better code faster. The company is building tools that integrate deeply into the development workflow, combining AI capabilities with practical engineering to solve real problems developers face every day.
Cursor is growing its presence in Japan and seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer who will work closely with customer engineering teams to implement production-grade AI solutions. In this role, you will embed with customers, understand their workflows and pain points, and ship systems that deliver measurable business value.
What you'll do
- Partner with customers during discovery to map their codebases, workflows, and real bottlenecks, then define success metrics for AI-powered solutions
- Design, build, and deploy production agents and AI-native applications on Cursor's models, integrated directly into customers' engineering processes and tools
- Move fast: get a working version into production within days, then refine it over subsequent weeks based on real usage, monitoring data, and user feedback
- Own production reliability end to end, including tracing, evaluations, debugging failures, and managing latency and cost tradeoffs
- Build supporting infrastructure around AI models—tools, data retrieval systems, guardrails, skill sets, CI gates, and evaluation frameworks—and wire everything into the customer's authentication, data, and delivery systems
- Track concrete business outcomes that matter: revenue impact, cost savings, time savings, error reduction, cycle time improvement, or quality gains
- Work closely with senior technical leaders and domain experts, diving deep into their systems while keeping communication clear about architectural choices and results
- Enable customers to operate what you've built independently, and translate learnings into reusable patterns for Cursor's product roadmap
What you'll bring
- 5 or more years building production software as a software engineer, machine learning engineer, or data scientist
- Proven ability to write and review production code in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or other languages
- Track record of owning customer or operator outcomes from fuzzy problem to shipped system, not just prototypes or presentations
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining AI agents or workflows in production, including debugging real failures across models, tools, data, and delivery pipelines
- Demonstrated expertise in production operations: metrics, alerting, safe deployments, and incident response
- Full-stack capability: you build frontend, backend, infrastructure, and work through prompt iteration
- Comfort navigating ambiguity and shipping before every detail is specified
- Ability to communicate effectively with both individual engineers and senior leadership
- Fluency in both Japanese and English
Nice to have
- 2 or more years in customer-facing roles, leading discovery conversations and owning outcomes for external stakeholders
- Hands-on experience with agents and tool-calling, evaluation frameworks, retrieval systems, CI/CD platforms, or AI-native coding workflows
- Background as a forward-deployed engineer, solutions architect, platform engineer, or founding engineer who owned an AI product end to end
What they offer
- Full-time remote position based in Japan
- Opportunity to work directly on production systems that customers depend on daily
- Access to Cursor's latest AI models and tools as part of the development process
Pay, location & hours
Salary not listed. Fully remote, open to applicants in Japan. Working hours: APAC-friendly hours.
